Thyroid Disease

Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid condition, appears in 95% of cases to be as a result of destruction of the thyroid gland, by the dog’s own immune system, and it is therefore considered an autoimmune disease.  Hypothyroidism is a relatively common endocrine disorder in dogs.

Clinical signs include lethargy, weight gain, intolerance to the cold, and excess shedding of the coat, sometimes there is also a dryness of the skin, which also becomes darker in pigment.

Dogs with Thyroid disease will require ongoing daily synthetic thyroid hormone replacements, to return them to a normal quality of life.
